Light Up The Streets

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Mickey has decked the halls, and pumped up the volume. Every Disney property has its own particular slant on the holiday, and each one is a unique experience. For 16 years one of the shining jewels in Mickey’s crown has been the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights strung along the streets of America in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

It is one of the most breathtaking displays of Christmas lights anywhere, and is a must see for anyone at Disney for the holidays. From building to building, from top to bottom, every square inch of real estate along the streets of faux New York is covered with colored, twinkling Christmas cheer. If that were not spectacular enough, every ten minutes the music ramps up and a high energy soundtrack of contemporary Christmas music blasts from thousands of speakers to set the lights, and the crowds dancing to the beat while makeshift snow falls on Central Florida.

Over 10 miles of rope lighting, connected by about 30 miles of extension cords come together to create this illusion, and part of the magic of Disney is you  have to really strain to see “behind the scenes”.  The cast members do an excellent job of “maintaining the illusion”.

One of the best ways to experience the lights is to immerse yourself in the jam packed wall to wall human stampede when the switch is thrown. Even for confirmed crowd haters like this writer, the experience is, well…magical like all else that is Disney.

To be sure, you will not move fast, you will not move much, and you will be up close an personal to everyone around you, but the energy of the crowd when the snow begins to fall an the music begins to blare rises to a crescendo that results in even the most left footed of your party dancing along with the lights.

Enjoy the lights, grab a hot chocolate (assuming it’s not 90 degrees when you go), dance a bit, sing-a-long, and enjoy the magic that is uniquely Mickey!
